Zambia internationals blocked from NWSL return by Ebola travel rules

Three Zambia national team players are unable to reenter the United States because of Ebola related travel protocols after an Olympic qualifier in Uganda, leaving their NWSL clubs without them for much of the season run in. Zambia played in Uganda on Oct. 8, and current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rules bar foreign nationals who have been in Uganda from entering the U.S. for 21 days, which has sidelined Barbra Banda, Racheal Kundananji and Prisca Chilufya despite the NWSL stating that all three are in excellent health.

With the NWSL regular season scheduled to end on Nov. 1, the 21-day restriction means the Zambia trio could miss almost the entire stretch drive for their teams. In contrast, Washington forward Rosemonde Kouassi avoided any quarantine complications when her club did not release her for Ivory Coast's first leg match in Congo. She only joined the national team for the second leg and returned to Washington this week without triggering the reentry rules.

St Louis CITY2 season ends in MLS NEXT Pro quarterfinal loss

St Louis CITY2's MLS NEXT Pro season ended with a 2-0 defeat to Portland Timbers2 at Providence Park in the Western Conference quarterfinal. Maximilian Kissel scored the opener in the 12th minute, and Noah Santos added a second in the 69th minute to send Portland into the conference semifinal and eliminate St Louis from the postseason.

Columbus NWSL expansion club taps Lucy Rushton as first GM

Columbus' forthcoming NWSL expansion team named Lucy Rushton as the first general manager in club history, giving the 2028 entrant a veteran executive to oversee its sporting project. The yet unnamed club is set to debut in 2028 alongside Atlanta City FC, with Rushton reporting to Haslam Sports Group president of global soccer Tim Bezbatchenko.

Rushton previously became Bay FC's inaugural general manager and guided that expansion side to the playoffs in its first season before resigning three months into the campaign, a move she described as one of the hardest decisions of her life. She also played a key role in launching Atlanta United ahead of its 2017 MLS debut, and she told ESPN that Columbus expects to compete for trophies from Day one and that ownership's ambition means this is gonna be elite.

Gotham, Spirit clash could decide NWSL Shield, playoff spots

Gotham FC and the Washington Spirit meet Saturday, and Gotham can clinch the NWSL Shield with a win or draw combined with a North Carolina Courage victory.

The Spirit, who have oscillated between first place and the top five this season, can secure a playoff berth with a win or with help from favorable results involving San Diego, Bay FC or Chicago. The game adds another chapter to an evolving rivalry that stretches back to Gotham's Sky Blue FC era and has been intensified by recent postseason meetings.

Hell is Real derby carries heavy playoff stakes in MLS East

Cincinnati sit ninth in the Eastern Conference on 36 points, occupying the final Wild Card spot, while Columbus are 13th on 32 points, four back of their in state rivals.

Rowdies can clinch Players' Shield against stingy Detroit City

In the USL Championship, the Tampa Bay Rowdies host Detroit City FC on Saturday in a top of the table clash that could decide the Players' Shield. Tampa Bay sit on 55 points and can clinch the regular season title with a victory over Detroit, which comes in with 50 points and remains one of only three clubs still able to deny the Rowdies the trophy.

The matchup pits Tampa Bay's high powered attack, tied for second in the league with 49 goals, against a Detroit back line that has conceded a league low 20 goals. With both sides already among the contenders in the Eastern Conference, the meeting could serve as a preview of a high stakes postseason rematch.

Orange County, Phoenix meet in pivotal Western playoff race

Orange County SC and Phoenix Rising FC face off Saturday in a crucial USL Championship Western Conference contest that could shape the remaining playoff spots. Phoenix recently halted a three game losing streak with a victory over Las Vegas, while forward Ishan Sacko has emerged as a Golden Boot contender on 14 goals this season.

Orange County hold a three point lead over Phoenix and own the head to head tiebreaker through in conference wins, meaning even a draw would keep them ahead in the standings. With limited games left and multiple teams chasing the final positions, the result carries major implications for both clubs' postseason hopes.

Ashley Sanchez chases NWSL scoring record and playoff push

Ashley Sanchez has reasserted herself for club and country, returning to the U.S. women's national team and scoring in a 2-2 draw against world No. 1 Spain on Tuesday. The North Carolina Courage attacker is tied with Temwa Chawinga's single season NWSL scoring record at 20 goals after shifting from central midfield to the wing, making her the first American to reach that mark.

Sanchez can claim the record outright Saturday when the Courage host San Diego Wave, a match that also carries major playoff stakes. North Carolina sit eighth on 42 points, holding the final playoff spot, so their meeting with San Diego will influence both Sanchez's place in the record book and the club's postseason fate.

Houston forward Lyle Foster also received an official warning for the remainder of the 2026 season, including the playoffs, for violent conduct against San Diego's Onni Valakari.

Americans abroad: Milan unbeaten as Adams, Robinson navigate struggles

In England, Tyler Adams' Bournemouth host Sunderland and Antonee Robinson's Fulham host Hull, with both clubs wrestling with early relegation concerns after summer managerial changes. Robinson's involvement is uncertain because of injury, adding to Fulham's worries in the opening stage of the campaign.

Reyna, Strasbourg get major test against PSG

Gio Reyna and Strasbourg face a marquee Ligue 1 challenge when they welcome reigning champions Paris Saint Germain. Reyna heads into the match after registering two assists over the recent international window and has one goal in six appearances for Strasbourg since his move from Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Strasbourg's recent history against PSG is daunting, with just one win in their last 10 meetings in all competitions. That lone victory came at home, and they will again rely on Reyna's creativity as they look for another upset on their own pitch.

Eddie Johnson, Landon Donovan feud over Cavan Sullivan comments

A public spat has erupted between former U.S. teammates Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan following Donovan's comments about young prospect Cavan Sullivan. On his Unfiltered Soccer podcast with Tim Howard, Donovan urged caution about overhyping Sullivan and referenced several players whose careers did not match early expectations, including Johnson.

Johnson responded with a lengthy message on social media criticizing Donovan for, in his view, harshly judging young players' paths without fully acknowledging his own struggles in European football. The back and forth has spotlighted wider debates in American soccer over how to talk about rising talents and the pressures that accompany early stardom.
