Tom Aspinall is reportedly shutting down exit talk, Song Yadong is said to have shocked the division in Shanghai, and Glover Teixeira proved he's still got it in his boxing debut. There's a ton to unpack from the weekend, from a heavyweight champion reportedly swatting away departure rumors to one of the year's biggest upsets in China. Let's get into it. Tom Aspinall addressed the rumors swirling about a possible departure from the UFC. The UFC Heavyweight Champion (undisputed) flatly denied he's looking elsewhere, telling reporters, "It's not true." UFC Shanghai delivered one of the wildest nights of the year when Song Yadong reportedly defeated Umar Nurmagomedov in the main event, with some calling it an upset win for Yadong. Yadong wasted no time capitalizing on the win, immediately calling for a shot at the UFC bantamweight title after taking out a fighter many considered the division's next big thing. Umar, for his part, released a statement addressing the loss, his first public comments since the fight. The Shanghai card produced controversy beyond the cage when Usman Nurmagomedov's actions at ringside drew scrutiny, with some reports suggesting he was accused of throwing an elbow toward Song Yadong. Usman denied the claim in a statement, brushing off the outrage with a message rooted in faith. "Only what is ordained for us will befall us. In any situation, Alhamdulillah. People make such a huge tragedy out of this; they really ought to calm down," he said. Glover Teixeira made his professional boxing debut a memorable one, defeating fellow UFC legend Mauricio Shogun Rua by decision in a boxing match at Spaten Fight Night 3. Both men were making their pro boxing debuts, and it was Teixeira who left no doubt about who the better man was on this night. Charles Oliveira's coach and manager Diego Lima told MMA Fighting the team is open to a matchup with Diego Lopes as they map out the BMF champion's next move. Aljamain Sterling had some fun at Mauricio Ruffy's expense after Ruffy suggested a win over Arman Tsarukyan at UFC three thirty one could send him straight into a lightweight title shot. Elsewhere, longtime UFC vet Joe Lauzon made a successful bare knuckle debut at Fenway Park in Boston, scoring five knockdowns, and in boxing, Filip Hrgovic stopped previously unbeaten prospect Moses Itauma in round nine to capture the vacant IBF heavyweight title.

Welcome to Open Scoring MMA. This is episode 73 for August 30th, 2026, your daily look at what's happening now and next across the world of MMA and UFC. DUKE: Big one right out of the gate, Nora. Tom Aspinall had to shut down some noise this weekend.
NORA: Yeah, exit rumors. People were floating the idea he's looking to leave the UFC.
DUKE: And he just came out and said it flat out, denied he's planning to leave and go chase something else.
NORA: Which matters because he's the current UFC Heavyweight Champion right now.
DUKE: Right, so if that guy walks, the whole division picture blows up.
NORA: It doesn't blow up today though. He shut it down himself, publicly, no hedging.
DUKE: Good. Because heavyweight's messy enough without losing the guy holding the gold.
NORA: Exactly, keep him in the building, keep the picture toward unification stable.
DUKE: Alright, let's get into Shanghai, because that main event went sideways in the best way.
NORA: Song Yadong knocked out Umar Nurmagomedov. Huge upset.
DUKE: He came in as a plus four fifty underdog against a guy people were calling the bantamweight heir apparent.
NORA: And he finished him. That's not a decision, that's a knockout over a guy who was supposed to be next in line for gold.
DUKE: And now Yadong's already calling for the title shot at one thirty five.
NORA: He should. You beat a top contender like that in that kind of fashion, you've earned the conversation.
DUKE: Does the division actually give it to him though?
NORA: That's the question. But you can't rank him behind guys he just knocked out cold.
DUKE: Meanwhile Umar finally spoke for the first time since that loss.
NORA: He put out a statement, didn't dodge it.
DUKE: I respect that. Some guys go quiet for weeks.
NORA: A setback like that at his level, the response matters almost as much as the fight did for how he's viewed going forward.
DUKE: And there was drama around the cage too, with Usman Nurmagomedov.
NORA: Different guy, Usman, PFL lightweight champ, he was there in Umar's corner.
DUKE: And people accused him of throwing an elbow at Yadong in the chaos afterward.
NORA: He denied it outright. He told Bloody Elbow, quote, "Only what is ordained for us will befall us. In any situation, Alhamdulillah. People make such a huge tragedy out of this, they really ought to calm down," end quote.
DUKE: That's about as unbothered a response as you're gonna get.
NORA: It is. But that clip's gonna follow him around regardless of what he says about it.
DUKE: Let's get into some callouts, because Charles Oliveira's camp is already plotting his next move.
NORA: His coach Diego Lima opened the door to a fight with Diego Lopes.
DUKE: That's a big name-versus-name matchup. Do Bronx is the BMF belt holder, former lightweight champ.
NORA: And Lopes has been climbing hard. If that fight gets made, it's a legit main event anywhere.
DUKE: I'd watch that in a heartbeat. Two guys who go for finishes every single time out.
NORA: Style-wise it's a nightmare matchup for both of them, which is exactly why fans want it.
DUKE: Speaking of loud claims, Mauricio Ruffy said something before UFC 331 that got Aljamain Sterling fired up.
NORA: Ruffy said a win over Arman Tsarukyan could send him straight to a lightweight title shot.
DUKE: And Sterling roasted him for it.
NORA: I mean, he hasn't even fought Tsarukyan yet.
DUKE: Right, that's the part that gets me. Tsarukyan's a legit top contender at lightweight.
NORA: One of the best in the world not holding the belt right now.
DUKE: So beating him is huge, no doubt.
NORA: But straight to a title shot? That's a stretch even if he wins clean.
DUKE: Sterling clearly agrees with us on that one.
NORA: He's not wrong to laugh at it.
DUKE: The lightweight division's stacked. You don't jump a line like that off one win.
NORA: Not unless it's a statement finish, and even then it's a hard sell.
DUKE: Ruffy's talented, I like the kid.
NORA: Everybody likes the kid. But talk like that ages badly if he doesn't deliver on September nineteenth.
DUKE: Now let's talk combat sports outside the cage for a minute, because Glover Teixeira put on a show.
NORA: He beat Mauricio Shogun Rua across eight rounds in a boxing match, both of them former UFC champs.
DUKE: With Alex Pereira in his corner too, which is a nice touch.
NORA: Teixeira dropped Shogun early and just dominated the rest of the way to a decision win.
DUKE: Retired legends running it back in the boxing ring, I'm here for that every time.
NORA: It's brutal to watch if you're a Shogun fan, honestly. Eight rounds of that is a long night.
DUKE: And Joe Lauzon had his own moment, made his bare knuckle debut at Fenway Park.
NORA: In Boston, his hometown, and he scored five knockdowns to win it.
DUKE: Five knockdowns. At forty two years old.
NORA: The man's still got it, whatever it is he's got.
DUKE: And in boxing proper, Filip Hrgovic stopped Moses Itauma in round nine to win the vacant IBF heavyweight title.
NORA: That's a massive result. Itauma was the hype train of that division, and Hrgovic got through nine rounds and finished him.
NORA: Huge for his career trajectory. That's a real heavyweight title, not a paper one.
DUKE: Before we get to our pick, the Reddit crowd's already doing our job for us.
NORA: Our model's pick this week is Renato Moicano.
NORA: The r slash MMA community's got a whole data science breakdown running on Islam Makhachev versus Ian Garry.
DUKE: People building their own models now, I love it.
NORA: Good, because we've got our own numbers, and it's time to put them up.
DUKE: Alright, model's on Islam Makhachev over Ian Garry. Talk me into it.
NORA: We're at twelve point eight percentage points above the market on this one.
DUKE: That's a real gap.
NORA: It is. That's not us splitting hairs, that's us seeing real value where the line's sitting.
NORA: Grappling volume and control time mostly. Garry's never faced sustained top pressure like Makhachev brings.
DUKE: I buy that on paper.
NORA: But I'll be honest with you, our model's sitting at forty five and fourteen on the season, a hit rate of seventy six point three percent.
DUKE: And the market's actually beating us right now, right?
NORA: Yeah, the market's hitting seventy eight point six. We are not beating the books overall.
DUKE: So why should anyone trust the big gap on this one?
NORA: Because our value picks, the ones where we depart big like this, are seven and one.
DUKE: Okay, that I like a lot better.
NORA: When we diverge this hard from the line, it's usually for a real reason, not noise.
DUKE: Fair enough. I'm one and one on the season myself, so I'm not exactly bragging rights over here either.
NORA: I'm oh and one, so let's just say we're both due.
DUKE: We're going with Makhachev then.
NORA: Makhachev it is.
DUKE: Let's look ahead, because the schedule doesn't slow down at all this week.
NORA: Dana White's Contender Series Season Ten, Week Four hits Tuesday, September first.
NORA: Contract season, every one of these guys is fighting for their careers in real time.
DUKE: Then Saturday, September fifth, we're hearing UFC Fight Night brings Dan Hooker against Salahdine Parnasse.
DUKE: Hooker's been in wars his whole career, and Parnasse is unbeaten and dangerous, that's a real litmus test for him.
NORA: And keep an eye further out too. Contender Series Week Five lands September eighth.
DUKE: Then Noche UFC on the twelfth, Jean Silva against Jose Miguel Delgado.
NORA: And the big one, UFC 331 on September nineteenth, Alexandre Pantoja defending against Joshua Van. We're also hearing Arman Tsarukyan and Mauricio Ruffy are on the card.
DUKE: That's the fight that'll tell us if Ruffy's talk was worth anything.
NORA: We'll find out fast.
DUKE: That's it for today's show, folks.
NORA: Big week coming, plenty to track.
DUKE: We'll see you right back here tomorrow.
