Welcome to Open Scoring MMA, episode 122 for October 18th, 2026. DUKE: So we gotta open with this, there's footage out there of a police officer knocking out a fan while breaking up a crowd brawl at UFC Edmonton.
NORA: That's wild. A cop with a knockout blow on fight night.
DUKE: It's almost fitting, because the actual main event ended with a knockout that might beat it.
NORA: Mike Malott knocked out Joaquin Buckley with a knee, and it's in the Knockout of the Night conversation.
DUKE: A knee, Nora. Buckley's one of the scariest finishers in the welterweight division and Malott put him out cold at home in Canada.
NORA: That's the story of the whole weekend, honestly.
DUKE: It really is. We're gonna spend a good chunk of today on it.
NORA: Let's dig into everything that came out of that card.
DUKE: Now on to the results. Before we get back to Edmonton, let's talk PFL Chicago, that one went down Friday night at Wintrust Arena.
NORA: Bishop topped Carmouche for the flyweight title there.
DUKE: That's a title change at women's flyweight in the PFL, which matters for that whole division's pecking order heading into next season.
NORA: Right, and PFL's been building its women's flyweight class for a while, so a new belt holder resets everything.
DUKE: We'll keep an eye on what's next for both of them. Now on to the fighter news. Mike Malott's already looking ahead, he's eyeing a January return in Toronto.
NORA: And he welcomed the idea of fighting Jack Della Maddalena down the line.
DUKE: That's a huge swing for him to even float.
NORA: It is, Della Maddalena's a top contender, so Malott name dropping that fight shows how much stock he's got in himself after this win.
DUKE: Can you blame him? He just blasted a ranked killer in front of his home fans.
NORA: No, I can't. He also talked through some of the tactical choices he made in that fight.
DUKE: A guy coming off that kind of statement win wanting to fight in Toronto in January, that's a smart business move too, keep the momentum rolling at home.
NORA: Exactly, strike while it's hot.
DUKE: Now on to the callouts. Manel Kape's not shy, he's predicting a historic rout against Joshua Van.
NORA: He actually compared it to Anderson Silva versus Forrest Griffin.
DUKE: That's one of the most one sided beatdowns in UFC history as a reference point.
NORA: Bold. Kape's ranked first in the flyweight picture and is favored to get next crack at Van's belt, but nothing's officially confirmed yet.
DUKE: So he's talking like the fight's signed when it isn't even locked.
NORA: Fair. Let's stay on confidence, because Sergei Pavlovich just threw a grenade into Alex Pereira's week. Pavlovich promised a surprise for his fight against Pereira at UFC 335.
DUKE: This comes right after Pereira's been exchanging accusations and barbs behind the scenes with people in the promotion.
NORA: So Pavlovich posting on X in the middle of that storm, timing's not an accident.
DUKE: No chance. He's got one of the scariest right hands in the heavyweight division, so a surprise from him is not something Poatan should brush off.
NORA: Agreed, that fight just got a lot more interesting before it's even been built out.
DUKE: And speaking of drama, Joaquin Buckley refused to shake Dana White's hand at the UFC Edmonton weigh ins.
NORA: Dana addressed it afterward and said he's got no problem with Buckley over it.
DUKE: But he also couldn't resist trolling him a little. Dana said, quote, as soon as he lost, I told Hunter cut him, end quote.
NORA: That's Dana being Dana, needling a guy who just got knocked out and snubbed him on camera.
DUKE: Rough weekend for Buckley all around then, loses the fight, then gets roasted by the boss.
NORA: Yeah, not the way you want your week to go.
DUKE: Now on to the around the sport.
NORA: Mike Malott got the hundred thousand dollar Performance of the Night award for that main event finish.
DUKE: And he wasn't alone, four fighters total walked away with hundred thousand dollar bonuses from that card.
NORA: It was the twelfth finish of the night at that event, so the bonus pool was earned.
DUKE: Twelve finishes on one card is nuts.
NORA: It really speaks to how action heavy that whole lineup was, start to finish.
DUKE: And the reaction from other fighters has been something else. One pro said his mouthpiece flew about twenty feet.
NORA: That's not an exaggeration either given the angle of that knee.
DUKE: Another fighter summed up the room with, quote, we are sick for loving this sport, end quote.
NORA: That's the kind of reaction you get when a finish actually lives up to the hype after the fact.
DUKE: The word going around from fighters was simply, quote, nasty, end quote.
NORA: One word, but it covers it.
DUKE: Now the debate online is whether Malott's a perennial top ten welterweight going forward or if this was a one off ceiling raiser.
NORA: He's become the first Canadian with a real run at UFC gold conversation since Georges St Pierre, at least in the way fans are talking about him now.
DUKE: That'll do it for today's show, Nora, a wild one out of Edmonton to close out the week.
NORA: It really was, see you all back here tomorrow.
