UFC 335 is starting to take shape. The promotion has announced three marquee matchups for the Las Vegas card on December 12, and early betting markets are already telling a story of their own.
Sherdog and Yahoo Sports both report that Alex Pereira and Diego Lopes opened as underdogs when the lines dropped. That's notable for a fighter ranked number two at featherweight who's won his last outing, a second round TKO of Steve Garcia, and who carries a 1576 Elo built over ten bouts.
Pereira is against Sergei Pavlovich. Pavlovich is ranked third at heavyweight and is coming off a first round knockout of Tallison Teixeira in under a minute. Bloody Elbow points out that Teixeira trains with Pereira, which gives this fight a revenge subplot on top of everything else. Teixeira himself is already booked against Shamil Gaziev on November 21.
Pereira is moving on from a second round knockout loss to interim UFC heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane, and Joe Rogan told LowKick MMA that Pereira is determined to keep chasing a heavyweight title rather than return to light heavyweight. Rogan added that Pereira wants another shot at Gane but has to get through Pavlovich first, calling Pavlovich a huge, powerful heavyweight with excellent boxing.
Fans are already debating the UFC 335 odds on Reddit, with plenty arguing Pereira has more of a path against Pavlovich than the numbers suggest.
