Dana White is pushing back on Oscar De La Hoya's explanation for skipping the Ryan Garcia-Conor Benn card, a story picked up by multiple outlets including MMA Fighting, Cageside Press, Sherdog and BJPenn.com. De La Hoya reportedly stayed away from the WBC title fight because he worried White and Zuffa Boxing were setting him up to be embarrassed in front of everyone.
White says that is not how he operates, no matter how deep the bad blood runs between the two of them.
'Oscar knew where he was sitting. Oscar was coming in the back, like all the celebrities do, to the celebrity VIP area, and he knew all of that. I'm not saying that in his mind he didn't think, maybe these guys are gonna do that, but let's just be straight up and open about this: I would never do that to anybody,' White told MiddleEasy.
He didn't shy away from the history between them either. 'Listen, my dislike for Oscar De La Hoya is very well known. He knows it, I know it, and it's mutual. But I am the type of person, I would call and say, don't even try and show up to this fight. You're not welcome. I would never have somebody show up to an event and do that,' he said.
White then pointed to his own experience getting iced out, saying Vince McMahon pulled something similar on him once. 'It happened to me. Vince McMahon did it to me for Ronda's first wrestling match,' he said, referencing Ronda Rousey's WWE debut.
White also made clear he doesn't pretend to be friendly with people he can't stand. 'If I don't like you, and I tell people straight up, we're probably not going to, let's not even talk to each other,' he said.
The back and forth adds another wrinkle to the long-running feud between White and De La Hoya as their respective boxing ventures continue to compete for the same spotlight.
