Ilia Topuria has broken his silence. The former two division champion posted a message signaling his return to the Octagon, telling The Mac Life, "Not to reminisce, but to remember. The Matador is coming back."
It's the first real sign of life from Topuria since his lightweight title shot ended in brutal fashion at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14, when Justin Gaethje finished him by TKO in the fourth round at the five minute mark. That result handed Gaethje the belt and left Topuria, who still sits at number one in our lightweight rankings, searching for his next move.
Dana White has now put a rough window on it. Speaking about Topuria's comeback timeline, White said the promotion is "working on that" and is hoping to get him back in the first half of 2027, according to Bloody Elbow.
That's a long runway, but it gives the division time to sort itself out. Both numbers suggest this is still very much an elite tier matchup whenever it happens again.
Topuria's announcement has reignited chatter about a possible clash with Paddy Pimblett, who's been climbing the same weight class. Pimblett, ranked fifth at lightweight, last fought on July 11 and finished Benoit Saint Denis with a D'Arce choke just 52 seconds into the first round. His Elo sits at 1565, close enough to Topuria's and Gaethje's numbers to make a showdown with 'The Matador' genuinely compelling on paper.
For now there's no opponent or date locked in, just a timeline from the UFC's top brass and a fighter signaling he's ready to go again.
