Raoni Barcelos is still in the hospital days after his unsettling finish at UFC Vegas 121, though the updates trickling out since have gotten steadily better. Both Bloody Elbow and Sherdog report that Barcelos is now able to walk, talk and eat, even as questions remain about what caused him to lose consciousness after the fight.

The 39 year old Barcelos, ranked thirteenth at bantamweight, was finished by Raul Rosas Jr. via knockout in the fifth round at 1:38 on September 26, a result that flips the rankings script since Rosas Jr. sits one spot above him at twelfth. Our Elo model has Barcelos at 1546 and Rosas Jr. at 1590, both built off nine fights, and this win nudges Rosas Jr. further ahead in a division he's still climbing.

What made the finish alarming wasn't the stoppage itself but what followed. Sutterer, describing the scene to Bloody Elbow, said the ending of tonight's UFC main event between Rosas Jr. and Barcelos unfolded in a very scary way, with a lot of scary scenes playing out in the Octagon.

Ariel Helwani has been among the main sources for updates since, reporting that Barcelos is conscious and lucid, and able to walk and eat.

Sherdog has also weighed in with an opinion piece examining how the UFC handled the aftermath, questioning the promotion's crisis response even as the medical news trends positive. Meanwhile, a thread on r/MMA built around Helwani's update shows fans are closely tracking every scrap of information on Barcelos' condition.

For now, there's no word on when Barcelos might be released or what it means for his standing in the bantamweight picture. The only real update is the one that matters most: he's talking, walking, and eating.
