Demetrious Johnson isn't buying the hype around Movsar Evloev, and he said as much out loud. The UFC Hall of Famer questioned how the unbeaten featherweight is still employed, pointing to a decision heavy resume as proof the sport's judges, not his finishing ability, are keeping him afloat.
It's a fair gripe on paper. Evloev is 20-0 overall and 10-0 inside the UFC, but every single one of those UFC wins has come by decision. His most recent, a majority decision over Lerone Murphy back in March, fit the pattern perfectly.
Alexander Volkanovski, the man Evloev will actually share the cage with, pushed back on the criticism and stood up for giving his challenger the opportunity. That fight is set for UFC 333 on October 24, with Volkanovski defending his featherweight title against the division's number one contender.
The numbers say this one will be close. Evloev also holds a 1597 Elo rating built off four tracked bouts, well above Volkanovski's 1505 across six.
Johnson's timing wasn't random either. The UFC just released Michael Page, a 1591 Elo fighter coming off a decision win over Nursulton Ruziboev, and Johnson's comments landed in that same conversation about who the promotion chooses to keep and who it lets go.
Whatever you think of Evloev's style, he's about to stand across from a two time champion with a real shot at the belt. However that fight plays out, it should settle plenty of the finishing debate on its own.
