LaGrange Stuns Ariano on Short Notice, UFC Staffer Earns Contract

Preston LaGrange upset unbeaten Nell Ariano in the DWCS main event. UFC employee Sal Everett also earned a contract with a knockout win.

Preston LaGrange had no business winning this fight on paper, and that's exactly why Dana White's Contender Series exists. Stepping in on short notice and moving up a full weight class to light heavyweight, LaGrange weighed in at 199.5 pounds and still found a way to defeat Nell Ariano by first-round TKO with punches at 2:24 of the round. Ariano came in unbeaten at 6-0, and LaGrange, a career middleweight at 6-1, just handed him a problem nobody saw coming. That's the kind of performance that gets you a contract regardless of the class you're fighting in, and it's the headline moment of the night. The co-main told its own strange story. Salhahuddin Everett, who has actually worked for the UFC as a runner and as Dana White's personal assistant, knocked out Ozzy Martin in the first round at 1:57. Martin tried to keep him at range with calf kicks and a left high kick, but Everett closed the distance and put together a one-two that ended things. White is going to need a new assistant, because Everett just punched his ticket to the roster with his own hands. It's a great story, but it's also a legitimate finish against an unbeaten prospect, and that combination is why it's the fight people will be talking about alongside the main event. The undercard backed up the theme of fast, violent finishes. Soares' finish was about as efficient as it gets on this series, and it's the kind of performance that puts a fighter straight on UFC radar without much debate. Roque Conceição was similarly sharp, using precise striking to set up a triangle choke on Alexander Chavez at 3:37 of the first round. The finish capped a flyweight bout where Conceição looked like he belonged at the UFC level well before the submission actually arrived. Alivia Bierley got her hand raised against Summer Onley to round out the night's results. Onley had talked before the card about having no real expectations going into her MMA career after getting the call to fight on Contender Series, and while the finish details weren't the story here, the result still adds another data point to a card that leaned heavily toward decisive finishes everywhere else. Add it all up and this was one of the more finish-heavy Contender Series cards in recent memory. LaGrange's main event win is the one that moves the needle most, since beating an unbeaten opponent up a weight class on short notice is the sort of résumé line that UFC matchmakers notice immediately. Everett's knockout is the one people will keep sharing, mostly because it's rare to see someone go from handing out UFC paperwork to earning a UFC contract in the same building. Soares and Conceição round out a group of finishers who all made the kind of statement this series is built for: show up, finish fast, and let the footage do the talking.
