DDP's Coach Says He Turned Down UFC Light Heavyweight Tournament

Dricus du Plessis' coach confirms the middleweight passed on a four man 205 pound tournament as he eyes a title reclaim.

Dricus du Plessis' coach says the number two ranked middleweight turned down a UFC offer to take part in a light heavyweight tournament, with the news corroborated across Sherdog, Yahoo Sports and Bloody Elbow. All three outlets report the promotion floated the idea of a tournament style format at 205 pounds, and that du Plessis walked away from it.

The timing lines up with recent comments from du Plessis about eventually testing himself at light heavyweight in pursuit of a second UFC title. But Yahoo Sports notes that while reclaiming the middleweight title remains his priority, he is open to other opportunities. He last fought on July eighteenth, where he returned against Kamaru Usman and won a unanimous decision.

Our own numbers back up just how good that win looked. Du Plessis sits at number two in the middleweight rankings and carries an Elo rating of 1609 built from eight bouts. Usman, ranked ninth at welterweight with an Elo of 1470 across four bouts, lost that decision to du Plessis on July eighteenth.

Fans are already digging into who exactly would have been in the tournament. The sources mention a four man light heavyweight grand prix that reportedly would have included du Plessis, all fighting for a shot at the 205 pound title.

For now, that bracket stays hypothetical. Du Plessis turning it down keeps him anchored at middleweight, where a title reclaim is still the stated goal, and it leaves the UFC's tournament concept without its biggest potential crossover name. Whether the promotion tries to build something similar without him is a different question, but the division's current contenders will be watching how this shakes out just as closely as the fans are.
