Alexander Volkov used the UFC 333 press conference to ask Dana White directly how he could earn a heavyweight title shot, and the moment did not stay contained to the two of them. The exchange pulled in featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who is on the same card, and left plenty of people talking about how White handled it.
Volkov has reason to push. He is ranked number two at heavyweight and is coming off a unanimous decision win over Waldo Cortes Acosta on May 9, 2026. His Elo sits at 1573 across six tracked bouts, numbers that back up the case he was making in that room.
His Elo is 1505 over six bouts. Getting dragged into a heavyweight contender's title plea on the night he is promoting his own featherweight title defense was not exactly the script.
The awkwardness around White's side of the exchange drew its own criticism, with questions raised over whether he failed to properly recognize Volkov in the moment. Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn weighed in too, saying he felt for White. Hearn told BJPenn.com, 'I expected these guys to be better at what they do, but I didn't expect it to affect them so badly and for it to, like, you can see the physical breakdown, the mental and emotional breakdown of what is happening when he's up there.'
None of it changes Volkov's booking against Kuniev, but it does put his title case squarely on the record heading into October.
