Daniel Cormier's broadcast commentary during UFC 333 has sparked a full blown social media feud with Dominick Reyes, and now Jon Jones has stepped into the middle of it.
Reyes picked up a first round knockout over Azamat Murzakanov on October 24, finishing the fight via punches at the 2:40 mark. That win has him sitting at number 8 in the light heavyweight rankings, and our Elo model has him at 1537 built off 22 bouts. None of that stopped him from going after Cormier once the cameras cut away.
According to sherdog.com, Reyes took issue with a 'kid' comment Cormier made about him on the call, accusing the UFC Hall of Famer of biased commentary during the broadcast. knockoutdaily.com framed it the same way, with Reyes rejecting what he saw as an unfair read on his performance. The back and forth between the two escalated quickly on social media after the event.
Sherdog.com reported that Jones mocked Reyes over their own disputed result, needling him with the line "close but no cigar." Jones told sherdog.com he only got involved because he heard his name coming up in the exchange, and he made clear he was not sticking around for it. He capped things off with a parting shot: "That was fun. Have a good day nerds. Get outside today."
It is a strange triangle. Cormier and Jones were rivals for years, Reyes and Jones have their own contentious history, and now Cormier and Reyes are the ones trading barbs in public. For a light heavyweight division already crowded with grudges, this latest round of online sniping gives fans one more subplot to watch heading into whatever comes next for Reyes.
