Dana White is not closing any doors on Alexander Volkanovski moving up to lightweight, according to mmaweekly.com, and the featherweight champion has given the UFC CEO plenty to think about.
Volkanovski is coming off another dominant night at UFC 333, finishing number one ranked featherweight contender Movsar Evloev by punches in the second round. Our own tracker has Volkanovski sitting at a 1505 Elo across six bouts, while Evloev, who rates 1597 over four bouts, now has to regroup after that loss.
The lightweight picture Volkanovski could walk into is stacked. ufc.com reported that White has opened the door to a superfight between Volkanovski and Gaethje, floated as a farewell bout for both veterans.
Arman Tsarukyan, ranked number two at lightweight with a 1618 Elo after knocking out Mauricio Ruffy with an elbow in the first round, told mmafighting.com he believes Gaethje is trying to duck him and that he would happily take a vacant title shot against Volkanovski instead. Topuria, still ranked number one at 155 with a 1599 Elo despite the loss to Gaethje, has also been named as a potential opponent, with Volkanovski himself calling for a lightweight rematch to test himself, per mundodeportivo.com.
Even Volkanovski's own camp is staying flexible. His coach Joe Lopez told Ag Fight the team would accept a fight against Charles Oliveira, though not without a jab or two at the Brazilian.
With White unwilling to shut the lightweight door and at least three ranked contenders already angling for a shot, Volkanovski's next move could reshape two divisions at once.
