Chris Weidman Says Alex Pereira Belongs at Light Heavyweight

The former middleweight champion says 205 pounds, not 185, is the right home for Alex Pereira as he preps for Sergei Pavlovich.

Chris Weidman has weighed in on where Alex Pereira's career should go from here, and his answer is simple: stay at light heavyweight. Both and reported the former middleweight champion's take, which means it's not just one outlet floating the idea.

It's a reasonable moment to ask the question. Pereira is currently ranked #1 in the UFC light heavyweight rankings, but his last outing didn't go his way. He lost to Ciryl Gane by TKO in his heavyweight debut at UFC Freedom 250 in June. That result snapped whatever momentum he had built in the division and put a bit of pressure on his next move.

That next move is already on the books. Pereira is set to face Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 335: Oliveira vs. Lopes on December 12, 2026, and the oddsmakers currently have him as an underdog at +153. Our own model is a touch more optimistic on his chances, giving him a 42 percent shot, which still lines up with the idea that this is a genuinely close fight rather than a lock either way.

The numbers behind both men tell their own story. Pereira sits at a 1571 Elo rating built across ten bouts, while Weidman's own number, built from a much smaller three fight sample in our tracker, comes in at 1476. Weidman clearly isn't speaking from a neutral corner either, he made his name at 185 before moving up himself, so his comments carry some weight on the subject of when a fighter's frame simply outgrows a division.

Whether Pereira agrees is another matter, but with Pavlovich looming in December, the debate over his best weight class isn't going away anytime soon.
