Mikey Musumeci is no longer the UFC BJJ bantamweight champion. MMA Fighting and MiddleEasy both report that Musumeci has vacated the title to turn his attention toward a future in mixed martial arts, with the grappling star saying he wants to "prioritize my training for MMA".
Musumeci built his reputation as one of the most decorated grapplers in the sport. He is a five-time IBJJF black belt World Champion and previously held championship gold in ONE Championship before moving into the UFC's grappling promotion.
Giving up that belt while it's still his to lose is a notable move, but it lines up with where his career appears to be heading.
Vacating the UFC BJJ title now means the promotion will need a new bantamweight champion, and it also removes any obligation for Musumeci to keep defending a belt while he reworks his training around striking, wrestling and the rest of what MMA demands.
MiddleEasy's report notes Musumeci isn't closing the door on grappling entirely, leaving open the possibility of future super fights even as his main focus shifts. For now, the bigger story is simple: one of the best pure grapplers in the sport is betting he can translate that skill into a cage.
